Original Universe or Alternate Universe? Original
Personality:
Years before, you wouldn't have pegged my brother Yancy and I for heroes. No Chance. We were never star athletes, never at the head of the class, but we could hold our own in a fight. And, it turns out we had a unique skill - we were drift compatible.
Almost immediately, we see that Yancy Becket embodies the big brother persona, the kind of person who takes up for their kid brother no matter what. Yancy knows the value of family, what it means to take up for a loved one, what it means to set aside differences in order to reconnect, to forgive petty transgressions and view the larger picture. He's a father figure in a lot of ways, and tried his best after their father left to show Raleigh (and Jaz) to respect not only themselves but those around them – though only once they have earned it.
He's startlingly calm in the face of his own demise, too, shouting at Raleigh "Raleigh listen to me"-- trying even then to give orders, to make sure that his little brother makes it back alive. He had to be calm in a dangerous situation, and how to be compassionate when one knows that they are at their end.
Yancy Becket knew he was going to die the moment the conn pod was breached – and his first instinct was to protect his younger brother. He knows the value of self-sacrifice and taking responsibility for one’s own actions, as well as an inherent will and need to protect those that he loves.
He also knows the value of tough love, and doesn't pull his punches when it comes to teaching Raleigh a lesson about bettering himself, and taking control of his life and of his wants and needs. They get into a bar brawl before they're even assigned to Gipsy Danger over a jaeger fly, and they argue, right there, in the middle of the bar-- "Maybe I'm just sick of waiting for you to grow some balls and do something about it!" "You always do this, Yance. There's nothing that I like that you can't wait to get your hands on!"
But really, it's not about the girl at all, not in the end. It's about two brothers fighting over a girl, a girl that they both barely know and in the end, Yancy realizes and knows what's more important - his family. It might be small and it might be fucked up, but Raleigh is his best friend, his brother, and not some one he's willing to give up for anything, any time.
